Antique keys from OLAIO (José Olaio & Cª (Filho), a benchmark Portuguese furniture manufacturer) used to identify the lock cut and allow replacement or duplication without needing to change the whole lock.
A rare piece, indispensable for anyone restoring a mid-century (Mid-Century Modern) piece of furniture and seeking the absolute authenticity of the brand's original components, or simply for anyone who appreciates and values design and functionality.
The locks were mass-produced, and OLAIO used a numerical coding system to map the key bitting and the internal pins/wafers of the lock used in specific batches or lines of OLAIO furniture.
It is not universal, meaning it does not open every piece by the brand, but rather any furniture compatible with key code number 33 (or 11, etc.).
If a customer lost the key to a piece of furniture (such as a desk, sideboard, or bookcase), they simply had to provide the number stamped on the escutcheon or original key to order a replacement. The numbers also helped distinguish between different furniture lines or types of furniture (for instance, desk keys vs. cupboard/display cabinet keys).
The metal is rust-free, cleaned with a fine patina, and the numbering is clearly legible. The total length of the key is 6.6 cm. Serves as an original replacement part. We have two units available, stamped with key code numbers 33 and 11.
